Qualifying Round
The story of Gridball '53

Crossing the Atlantic

Eleven remaining British and Irish teams, that had so far missed being included in the Championship, now finally got their chance, but to be a true World Championship, entry needed to come from farther afield. Including Brooklyn was a gamble in an era before non stop jet flight.

Newly included teams making their debut in the 1953 Championship:

EIRE:

Cork Rebels

Dublin Ravens

ENGLAND

Berkshire Deers

Islington Angels

Lancashire Hotpots

Lindsay Poachers

Sculcoates Flyers

SCOTLAND

Edinburgh Rocks

WALES

Monmouthshire Beacons

USA:

Brooklyn Lionesses

With an increase from twenty-four to thirty-six teams, there was a change in format again. The teams were divided into six groups of six teams, playing ten games to decide the three teams that would progress to the Second Round. The remaining eighteen teams played another ten game campaign in three groups of sex with the top two and two best third placed teams formign the quarterfinal knockout line up.
