The Portsmouth Story
The Portsmouth Pompeys were formed in 1948, originally calling themselves the Portsmouth Olives after the team colours. By 1951 they were the Pompeys, this being the nickname of the town itself. They missed out on competing in the first edition in 1951 and made a minimal impact when they did compete for the first time in 1952. Their breakout season came in 1957 when they were surprise Finalists, losing heartbreakingly in Sudden Death to Willesden.
