The Monmouthshire Story

The Beacons proved to be one of the weaker of the original thirty-six teams formed in 1948, resulting in them missing out on a place in the first two Championships of 1951 and '52. Once among the elite in 1953, they made an impressive debut, being the only one of that season's new teams to get out of their First Round Group. The Welsh side would grow on that to reach three quarterfinals before the end of the decade, as well as achieving a top ten World Ranking.
