The Dublin Story

Although Gridball is regarded as a British creation, the sport itself was invented on the Island of Ireland by Wrens stationed in Londonderry during World War Two and possibly inspired, to an extent by the local Gaelic sport of Camogie. However, when the Federation was created in 1948, only a team from Belfast, in Northern Ireland were created. Dublin, and the Irish Free State, which became the Republic of Ireland the following year was originally overlooked.

Within three years, the idea of introducing Irish teams, and Dublin in particular was a reality, with the Ravens signed up to join for 1953. Many pundits gave little hope to them or the eleven other debut sides that year, suggesting that the level of professionalism had moved so far forward in 1952 that the new teams would be too far behind.

Certainly, while the Ravens lacked star quality, they requited a coach who would be inspirational. Hazel Anderson, who up to that time was a respected Irish Field Hockey coach. Anderson instantly employed those tactics and skills upon her side at a time when Gridball coaching was in its infancy. They smashed ten past Stepney as they surprised everyone to reach the final where they were huge underdogs to West Ham. The Irish side took the game to the Londoners, deservedly taking the lead through Mary Norton before being pegged back in the third quarter. Most suspected Dublin would cave in the final ten minutes, but instead they were the side who found the extra gear with Lyn Cox scoring twice in the dying minutes to win the 1953 CHAMPIONSHIP.

The World title winning team broke up quickly over the years since and while Dublin have never been able to repeat their success, they#re still regulars in the latter stages of Supergrid.
